Community Partner Story

Acorn Pantry

What began in a garage in Redbank Plains has quickly grown into something much bigger – a place where choice and community sit at the centre of every interaction.

For founders, Lisa and Stewart, the idea behind Acorn Pantry was never just about food. It was about recognising how quickly life can change, and how easily people can lose control over everyday decisions when money becomes tight.

“Often choice is the first thing people lose when they are counting their pennies,” Lisa says.

That belief shapes the way Acorn Pantry operates. Rather than pre‑packed bags or rigid systems, people are invited to shop in a space that feels familiar – shelves stocked with fresh produce, bread and pantry staples, priced simply and clearly.

The pantry offers a selection of fruit and vegetables, all available for people to pick themselves. One of the volunteers suggested that they should pre-bag the produce. Lisa shared she said no, “If the person coming in can choose their own lemons like any other grocery store, that is the whole point.”

After starting out from home, demand grew quickly. Word spread through the community, not through advertising but through people telling others about a place that treated them with respect.

“We started in our garage at Redbank Plains and it just got really busy,” Lisa says.

Moving into a dedicated space allowed Acorn Pantry to welcome even more people – families, pensioners, carers and individuals who might not otherwise access food support.

At Acorn Pantry, success is defined by the difference made in people’s lives, not financial figures. The focus is on how many individuals and families are reached and supported.

“We are working on how many people we’re helping rather than how much money we’re bringing in,” Lisa says. “For us, the growth is how many people can come through the door.”

That mindset flows through everything, from pricing to layout. With no confusing specials or complex calculations, people can shop with confidence. There are no prices ending in 99 cents or other tricks to make totals harder to figure out – every price is straightforward, so shoppers can easily keep track of their spending. “If you’ve only got $50, you can add it up in your head,” Lisa explains. “You’re already under enough stress. We want to make it easy, just a quiet, calm, happy experience.”

Community sits at the heart of Acorn Pantry, and that sense of connection shows up every day – often in unexpected ways. Volunteers come from all walks of life, many first walking through the door as customers themselves.

“You shop here, you help that person who helps that person who helps that person,” Lisa says. “It all comes back around.”

For Stewart, some of the most memorable moments have nothing to do with stock levels or logistics. “There was a carer who brought a whole group in,” he recalls. “They made a day out of the visit. They loved it.”

Those moments reinforce why Acorn Pantry exists – not just to provide food, but to create a welcoming space where people feel seen.

“People come in, they’re happy, they’re grateful, and that makes all of this worth it,” Stewart says.

Even as Acorn Pantry continues to evolve, Lisa is realistic about the challenges of growth. There is still plenty to work through, but the focus remains clear. “Everything we do, there’s a reason for it, and it’s to make it easier for the people coming in,” she says.

With the support of partners like Foodbank Queensland and a community that continues to show up for one another, Acorn Pantry is building something that goes far beyond food relief.

Over 2,800km and 30 hours on NSW roads
Our journey with Brad Fittler & the 2026 NRL HOGS Tour

Foodbank NSW & ACT were lucky enough to join Brad Fittler and his team on the NRL HOGS National Tour for the first time in 2026.

In just one month, our team spent over 30 hours on the road and travelled more than 2,800km across NSW, providing free fresh fruit and water to families and young rugby league players.

Visiting Werrington, Gunnedah, Wagga Wagga, Batemans Bay and Goulburn, we proudly worked alongside stars including Greg Inglis, Yasmin Meakes, Dale Finucane and Jada Taylor to celebrate the profound connection between rugby league and the community.

Each stop gave us the chance to support local training clinics, fuel young athletes, and strengthen our connection with the regional groups we already serve.

Samantha Prescott, Chief Operating Officer of Foodbank NSW & ACT, highlighted the importance of our team being able to engage with the people we serve.

“We were excited to be part of the NRL HOGS National Tour supporting rural communities across NSW,” Mrs Prescott said.

“At Foodbank NSW & ACT, we know demand for food relief services in rural areas is high, which is why we distribute more than half of our food outside metro regions into far reaching corners of the state and territory.

Joining Brad and the rest of the NRL HOGS team gave us another chance to connect with those communities and provide fresh fruit and water to support select training clinics throughout the tour.

The NRL HOGS National Tour does fantastic work providing opportunities for young rugby league players and uniting people through the spirit of the game – and we’re thrilled we could be a part of it.”

Samantha Prescott

Chief of Operations

Having invited us on the tour, Brad Fittler showed his support for our mission to end hunger in our communities.

“Food is the absolute key to the future – the quality of food you eat and your access to food.

In understanding the enormity and the reality of some kids and parents lives, I wanted to find a way to have Foodbank NSW & ACT noticed more. So being part of the HOGS Tour was a good start!”

Brad Fittler

Australian rugby league commentator, TV presenter and former NRL player

With more than half of our food relief going to regional and remote areas, this tour offered invaluable time on the ground. These conversations and community moments help us better understand local needs so we can continue delivering essential support where it matters most.

A huge thank you to the NRL, Brad Fittler and every community member who welcomed us along the way.

Our partnership with The Great Unwaste campaign

We are proud to join The Great Unwaste campaign, a national movement led by End Food Waste Australia, calling on all of us to turn food waste around by taking simple actions at home.

Since the campaign launch last September, we have delivered 14 Unwasting workshops for the The Great Unwaste campaign with some awesome feedback from attendees including:

  • “Very knowledgeable and interesting. Would love to attend more.”

  • “Well worthwhile to pick up some tips and tricks on how to reduce food waste.”

  • “Programme built on experience gathered by presenter. A wealth of experience brought to the presentation.”

Across Australia, households throw away 2.5 million tonnes of food every year, which costs families money and places pressure on our environment.

The Great Unwaste campaign invites us to rethink the food we have, use more of what we buy and reduce waste through practical, everyday habits.

We are a founding member of End Food Waste Australia, so being part of this campaign is a natural extension of the important work we already do. Reducing food waste is essential to protecting our environment, and it also means more nutritious food can reach the Western Australians who rely on us.

Our role in helping Western Australians unwaste food

At Foodbank WA, we see every day how important it is for families to get the most out of their groceries. Our nom! nutrition education programs help people build the skills and confidence to plan meals, store food well and use leftovers in creative ways. These small steps make a big difference, helping families stretch their budget and reduce food waste at home.

Through hands-on cooking sessions, workshops and easy-to-use resources, we show people how to make healthier choices using the food they have on hand. This aligns closely with the seven key behaviours promoted through The Great Unwaste campaign, such as storing food the right way, flexible meal planning and enjoying leftovers.

Simple ways to reduce food waste at home

Here are some of the practical ideas we will be sharing throughout the campaign.

  • Plan your meals so you buy only what you need.
  • Store food properly so ingredients last longer.
  • Use leftovers creatively, like turning vegetables into soups or stir-fries.
  • Understand food labels so you know what’s still safe to eat.
  • Donate surplus food to Foodbank if you can’t use it.

These small actions help reduce waste, save money and support healthier eating.

Working together to make a bigger impact

Food waste is a national challenge, but change starts with each of us. By taking simple steps at home, we can help protect our environment and ensure more food reaches those who need it.

We are excited to share this partnership with our supporters. Together, we can help Western Australians unwaste food and build a future where nutritious food is accessible to everyone

Celebrating the women who strengthen our impact

Why International Women’s Day matters to Foodbank NSW & ACT.

International Women’s Day is a moment to recognise the women who give so much of themselves to ensure no one in NSW & the ACT goes hungry.

This year’s theme, Give to Gain, reflects a truth we see every day: when women are supported, included and empowered, our entire organisation becomes stronger, more resilient and more capable of serving our communities.

Foodbank NSW & ACT continues to grow as an organisation, where women choose to build their careers. Representation of women has increased from 54.1% in 2024 to 57.2% today, reflecting our commitment to inclusion, flexibility and creating pathways for women across all roles.

Women now make up 75% of our Executive Leadership Team, a milestone that reflects our commitment to ensuring leadership reflects the strength and talent across our organisation.

While women form the majority of our executive leadership, we recognise that strengthening representation at all levels remains an ongoing priority. Continued progress requires long‑term commitment, intentional development and sustained investment in leadership pathways for everyone at Foodbank NSW & ACT.

What ‘Give to Gain’ means to Foodbank NSW & ACT

Foodbank NSW & ACT’s work is built on giving so others can gain, and we rely on collaboration across teams, partners and communities. Our Head of Partnerships and Philanthropy, Lauren Kara-George, who leads an all-female team, highlights how working in food relief has shaped her own leadership and offers advice to emerging female leaders.

“I try to instil this mindset in the teams I lead by encouraging women to step forward, try new things, and back themselves, even if it feels a little outside of their comfort zone.

Working in food relief is deeply personal to me. I grew up in a single‑parent family on a council estate in the UK, where my mum worked three jobs and money was incredibly tight. That upbringing shapes how I lead today. I try to pass that mindset on to the women I lead by creating a culture where they feel supported, trusted and so very capable.”

Lauren Kara-George

Head of Partnerships and Philanthropy

Our International Women’s Day

To celebrate, we welcomed retired NSW Police Force Detective Superintendent, Deborah Wallace. Highlighting leadership, resilience and community impact, Deb shared inspiring stories from her remarkable career, many of which brought our staff and volunteers to tears.

Meet our
nom! Children team

Supporting parents and caregivers during the early years is at the heart of our nom! Children program.

These are the years where routines form, confidence grows and healthy habits begin to take shape.

Our nom! Children sessions give families practical, evidence-based support to help make feeding young children feel simpler and less stressful.

Our public health nutritionists bring deep expertise and a warm, human approach to every program we run, helping parents feel understood, encouraged and empowered.

Below, we are proud to introduce the team behind nom! Children, drawn from our nutrition education specialists who deliver programs across the state.

Tori Kurz (BSc (HumBiolNutn), MNutn&Dtcs, APD), Program Lead nom! Children

Tori leads our nom! Children program, supporting parents and caregivers of children aged 0 to 5 years. She is a Public Health Nutritionist and Accredited Practising Dietitian with more than five years of experience delivering evidence-based nutrition education to families. Her background includes a Master of Nutrition and Dietetics, specialist paediatric nutrition training and extensive study in the Ellyn Satter Division of Responsibility, which guides her approach to responsive and positive feeding.

Tori brings both professional expertise and lived experience as a parent, and she focuses on helping families build calm, enjoyable mealtimes. Her goal is to make feeding young children feel easier and more confident for every family she works with.

Charlotte McGinn (BSc (Food&Nutr), Public Health Nutritionist

Charlotte is passionate about making nutrition simple and accessible. She believes nourishing the body should not feel complicated, and she is committed to providing clear and practical guidance that meets families where they are. Equity is core to her work. She wants every family, regardless of circumstances, to have the knowledge and tools to make healthy choices.

Charlotte’s open and supportive approach helps parents and young people build confidence and form positive relationships with food. She loves connecting with people, listening to their stories and supporting them to create healthier everyday habits.

Libby Swanson (BSc (Nutrition), Dip Health Sc (Nursing), Public Health Nutritionist

Libby teaches parents of children aged 0 to 5 years the skills they need to support their child’s nutrition journey. She enjoys tailoring group learning so families can build confidence through practical skills and nutrition education. Her early career as a nurse in Perth and the Pilbara gave her strong insight into the diverse needs of regional and urban communities.

Libby remains inspired by her time in the Pilbara, where issues of injustice and inequity continue to shape her commitment to community focused education. With a blend of clinical experience, public health knowledge and cultural sensitivity, she brings purpose and empathy to every nom! Children session.

Jasmin Syammach (BHlthSc (Nutrition and Health Promotion), Public Health Nutritionist

Jasmin brings values of equity, integrity and inclusion to all her work. She delivers nutrition and cooking programs to school students, young people and families across communities in Western Australia. Her experience spans work with individuals, community organisations and the public health sector, always ensuring people’s needs remain at the centre.

Jasmin is passionate about sharing evidence based and accessible nutrition information. She focuses on simple, practical concepts that support communities to live healthy lives for longer.

Meet our new School Breakfast Program Support Officer

We’re excited to welcome our new School Breakfast Program Support Officer Laura Thomson,

whose passion for public health, community development and helping children thrive makes her a wonderful addition to our team.

Even in her first few weeks with us, she has already seen the strong sense of compassion and collaboration that drives our work across Western Australia.

Why Laura chose Foodbank WA

Laura shared that joining Foodbank WA feels like a privilege. After studying public health, health promotion and community development, she knew she wanted to work somewhere that aligned with her values. Laura said she feels lucky to now work with an organisation she has admired throughout her studies, even completing university assignments on our education programs. Seeing the passion within our team has reinforced that she’s exactly where she wants to be.

What her role involves

In her role, she supports the smooth and effective running of the School Breakfast Program. She works closely with Miranda, our Program Manager, to help coordinate the program and support schools that run breakfast clubs. With around 600 schools taking part, there’s plenty to learn and plenty of opportunities to make a difference.

What Laura’s most excited about

Lauras excited to help strengthen and streamline the processes that keep the program running well. Visiting schools is something she is very much looking forward to, as this will help her see first-hand how breakfast clubs operate and better understand the food-related needs within each school community.

Supporting schools and helping children start the day well

Laura hopes to support schools in their day-to-day delivery of the program and build strong relationships with educators. Meeting students, seeing how breakfast is served and understanding local challenges will help her make an even bigger impact.

Why a healthy breakfast matters

A healthy breakfast offers immediate physical and psychological benefits, but she also recognises its long-term impact on learning, social connection and overall wellbeing. Knowing the reach of Foodbank WA’s work, and the difference the School Breakfast Program makes every day, motivates her deeply.

A little about her

Laura’s favourite breakfast growing up was pancakes, lovingly cooked by her mum before school. These days on a busy morning she’ll grab a muesli bar and a piece of fruit.

When choosing between tea and coffee, it’s always tea.

One fun fact she shared is that she plays the flute, although not quite as well as she used to.

What the School Breakfast Program means to her

For Laura, the program represents social justice at its core. It gives children experiencing food insecurity, and their peers, the chance to start their day with a nutritious meal. She believes access to healthy food helps children think, feel and act their best, which is why she feels so proud to be contributing to the program.

Her goals for the next few months

Laura hopes to learn as much as she can about Foodbank WA and the program, get to know the team and take part in upcoming school visits. She’s eager to understand how each breakfast club runs so she can support them with integrity and care.

If she were a Superhero Foods® character…

She says she’d be Queen Pea, because the illustration is adorable and because peas are delicious.

Going the extra km to feed 69,000 Victorians a day

Australia is a country of sporting legends.

Who can forget Cathy Freeman’s gold-medal run that united our nation? Sir Donald Bradman’s folklore-defining cricket career. Dawn, Thorpie, Arnie, Kieren, Shane Gould and all the champions of the pool. Lionel Rose in the ring, Layne Beachley in the surf, Ash Barty on the court, and Gout Gout on the precipice. We even celebrate a horse with the biggest heart of them all.

But as a group of (not so elite) runners from Foodbank Victoria gets set to tackle the Ballarat Marathon, there is one sporting superstar’s story that inspires like no other. It’s the tale of Ballarat local Steve Moneghetti, who competed in his first-ever marathon at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. At the last minute. And then won a medal! Primarily a 10,000m runner at the time, Moneghetti went on to become one of Australia’s most decorated long-distance runners.

This April, our crew of 20 will lace up and follow in Moneghetti’s footsteps around Lake Wendouree, as we run in the 5km and 10km events to raise much-needed funds for Foodbank as part of the Ballarat Marathon.

Why? Because it takes a lot to keep Foodbank running, to put food on the tables of 69,000 Victorians every single day. But this marathon effort is nothing compared to what so many families are going through to feed their kids: skipping meals, going days without food. And that’s not okay.

Which is why we’re running, jogging and walking on their behalf. The more funds we can raise, the more food we can purchase to support every Victorian doing it tough across the state.

All we need now are some food angels to support us. Can you help us reach our target of $25,000? When every $1 donated is TWO meals created – we’ll be raising 50,000 meals and that’s going to get all of us across the finish line. There’s no bigger incentive. Just a few cheese toasties post event to sweeten the deal.

Thanks from all of us!

Help us raise 50,000 meals!

A special night at Community Cinemas

Our recent Community Cinemas event reminded us why moments of connection matter, and why partnerships like the one we share with Harvey Fresh and Lactalis make such a difference.

We were delighted to welcome representatives from Lactalis. The Melbourne locals shared how much they enjoyed being back in Perth and how valuable it was to reconnect with our community while in Western Australia.

They had attended the Busselton Swim which saw more than 4,000 participants and were energised by the opportunity to spend time with partners and local supporters.

The night was full of warmth and gratitude. Many of our customers took the time to personally thank Harvey Fresh for their ongoing support. Their messages were heartfelt and left a lasting impression on our valuable partners. A family currently experiencing homelessness attended and were shown unexpected kindness when a member of the public offered them $100 so the children could enjoy a small treat. Another moment saw volunteers offer food to a man sleeping rough nearby. These gestures captured the dignity and care that Community Cinemas brings to life.

Every attendee received a beanbag, drink and popcorn. Even though we had shared this ahead of time, people were still surprised and delighted. It helped make the evening feel truly special.

Those who attended were loved the night and commented on the joy they witnessed among customers and volunteers and the clear impact community events like this have.

What our customers told us

The feedback we received after the event speaks for itself:

  • “Thank you for a lovely evening. Sometimes we need a little sunshine to brighten our days… my lifeline comes from Foodbank. Thank you.”
  • “It was an amazing event and I really enjoyed it. I came by myself but still had a great time. If you ever need any volunteers, I would be happy to help.”
  • “Thank you to Harvey Fresh for sponsoring and thank you for the popcorn.”
  • “Another huge thanks for all you do. I really enjoyed the movie.”
  • “Thanks to Foodbank and Harvey Fresh for making it possible.”

This night reminded us why community matters. With the support of partners like Harvey Fresh and Lactalis, we can continue to create experiences that bring joy, dignity and connection to Western Australians doing it tough.

Run for a Reason to support Foodbank WA

We are excited to share that Foodbank WA has been chosen as a charity partner for the 2026 HBF Run for a Reason.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together to feed hope across Western Australia. Every step you take helps us support Western Australians doing it tough. We see the real impact that fundraising has on families facing hardship. Together we feed, educate and advocate for our community.

When you walk, run or wheel, you help make healthy food more accessible for people who need it.

Last year we provided more than 9.3 million meals thanks to the generosity of our supporters and partners. Your fundraising helps us keep shelves stocked, our Mobile Foodbank on the road and our nutrition education programs running in schools and communities.

Getting involved is simple. Visit the HBF Run for a Reason website to register for the event, then select Foodbank WA as your chosen charity and set up your fundraising page. Ask your family, friends and colleagues to support you then celebrate your impact on event day.

Every dollar raised provides food and essentials to people doing it tough. Your steps help families just like Bo Anne’s. As a single mum caring for her son through a kidney transplant, she found hope again through food relief and community support.

Join us, run with purpose and help feed hope in our community.
